In fragile states international and local businesses can be crucial for the stability and social rest. In this session SPARK wants to explore which role private sector plays and can play in fragile and conflict affected environments. How can companies find a balance between operating a healthy business and acting responsibly towards their respective community and the environment? Are these actually contrasting goals? And can businesses stay politically neutral in often polarized and highly political situations? Guest speakers are Mark Richards (BHP Billiton Iron Ore Strategy and Development, with responsibilities for M&A, and concession and infrastructure negotiations in West Africa) and François Lenfant (independent consultant and researcher at University of Amsterdam; currently finishing his PhD on The role of business in peace and conflict processes in Central Africa).
SPARK invites you to come to our Business for Peace talk, on November 1st in the Royal Tropical Institute (KIT). Please register at www.afrikadag.nl
