EU meets the Syrian students it supports in Turkey
On November 16-17, the Head of European Union Delegation, Ambassador Christian Berger, accompanied by Member-State Representatives of Estonia, Romania, Greece, Germany, Netherlands, France and Sweden met with Syrian refugee students supported SPARK’s scholarship programme in Gaziantep.
European journalists also met with the students, who are attending universities in Turkey with EU support. They shared the impact of this scholarship for their lives and how it gave them hope for their future. The programme has so far provided scholarships to 294 Syrian students, who can now continue their higher education in Gaziantep University, Harran University in Sanlıurfa, Mustafa Kemal University in Hatay and Korkut University in Osmaniye.
The students discussed the challenges that still face them in their studies, but gave their hopes and ambitions for the future, surrounding the rebuilding of their country. They presented Ambassador Berger with a bouquet of white flowers, in gratitude for the support they have received from EU Regional Trust Fund in response to the Syrian crisis, the ‘Madad Fund‘, to establish themselves in their country of refuge.
Then it was time for a round of selfies!
As a result of the meeting, Ambassador Berger will discuss the scaling up of scholarships to provide higher education opportunities to more Syrian students at Turkish universities. Also he proposed to link scholarship schemes for Syrians in Turkey with the Erasmus programmes.
