Every year since 1985, the 9 May is the official EU designated occasion to celebrate the fundamental values and visions of a peaceful and unified Europe, as first expressed on this day by Robert Schuman in 1950. In the Western Balkans, a regional celebration of EU Day is annually organised on a rotational basis.
The proclaimed intention of the EU is integration of the Western Balkan countries in the European political, economical and cultural structures. However, standing alone, these countries are relatively small and unattractive markets and therefore their economic sustainability depends on the creation of a common economic area that will more readily attract foreign investors and boost economic development. During the EU day, regional and international experts will discuss about mechanisms for creating an enabling environment for doing business in the Western Balkans and about economic perspectives of the SEE region. Their recommendations will be presented to policymakers from the region and Brussels.
