The first edition of the Liberia Summer University (LSU) was held between 6-24 July 2009. The LSU mainly focused on faculty development. It provided the teaching faculty (regardless their academic disciplines) from member universities of the Association of Liberian Universities and senior undergraduate students an opportunity to improve their writing, teaching, research and business development skills through a series intensive summer courses. The courses were intended to improve the following skills:
- Writing skills
- Research skills
- Computer skills, including internet and email
- Course planning, classroom management and evaluation and assessment methods
- Business plan development skills
Each course was taught by an international professor and a co-professor from an ALU member university. In addition, business skills trainers provided courses directed at improving business development skills. The follow- up classes, that took place from 27 July till 7 August 2009, were provided by the co-professor, with distance coaching from the visiting professor.
The courses were aimed at improving the quality of higher education in Liberia. The courses were taught in English.
In addition, a debating program on topics relevant to Liberia was organised, with a main goal to show the relevance of universities to the society. Also, a number of informal occasions were created for all participants to share ideas, experiences and network.
Visiting professors and trainers taught on a pro-bono basis. However, SPARK covered travel expenses, accommodation and a modest allowance for basic daily expenses.
