This year, SPARK's recognised Summer University Project expanded to Liberia. The pilot edition of the Liberia Faculty Enrichment Programme (LFEP), organised by SPARK together with the Association of Liberian Universities (ALU) and the Ministry of Education, was held from 6 till 17 July and focused primarily on faculty development. The project is aimed at enabling senior undergraduate students and teaching faculty to improve their writing, teaching, research and business development skills.
Background
Post-conflict Liberia is in the process of reconstruction and development. The entire education system is severely damaged and higher education institutions are unable to deliver the human resources, knowledge and research necessary for the development of the country. The main challenges for developing the education system concern for example the reconstruction of campuses, the provision of equipment and teaching materials and teacher and research capacity building.
Liberia Faculty Enrichment Programme
The Liberia Faculty Enrichment Programme addresses these issues by providing the opportunity to senior undergraduate students and teaching faculty from ALU members to improve their writing, teaching, research and business development skills through a series of intensive summer courses. The overall learning objective for participants is to be able to apply these skills and, to some extent, pass them on to students and colleagues. Participants who successfully pass their exams and fulfill assignments will receive a certificate and study credits.
The project brought together Liberian and international professors and students for a period of three weeks and provided about three courses. In addition, public debates on topics relevant to Liberia, with as main goal to show the relevance of universities to the society, were organised as well as a number of informal occasions for all participants to share ideas and experiences. Furthermore, a limited number of pilot training courses focusing on youth employment were offered.
