Intern UN Food and Agriculture Organization PDF Print E-mail

Please note that the position presented here below is not a vacancy at Spark itself, but an intern position at the Investment Centre of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (Italy) that is only being promoted by Spark.

Since 1994, FAO has been cooperating actively with the European Bank for Development and Reconstruction (EBRD). In the agricultural sector, the EBRD, which operates in 27 transition countries of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), mainly finances the private sector, primarily agrifood processors, retailers and financial intermediaries involved in agricultural commodity financing. Under its cooperation with the EBRD, FAO is supporting the private investments of the EBRD Agribusiness team by providing its expertise at all stages of the investment cycle: identification, preparation and implementation.

The emphasis of the EBRD/FAO cooperation was placed on a new area of cooperation: the coordination of International Financial Institutions (IFIs) efforts in agricultural financing throughout the region.
In 2003, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and FAO decided to launch the EastAgri initiative. EastAgri is a network of International Financing Institutions (IFIs) and private banks, financing agriculture in transition countries. The objective of EastAgri is to better coordinate the interventions of IFIs through (i) sharing of sector and country information and (ii) sharing of lessons learnt and best practices. One of EastAgri’s activities consists of creating and maintaining a website (see http://www.eastagri.org/) containing background information on (i) EastAgri members’ agricultural/agribusiness investment projects and (ii) the agricultural sector of the countries covered by EastAgri.

The Investment Centre is a division of FAO's Technical Cooperation Department. It promotes greater investment in agriculture and rural development by assisting developing countries to identify and formulate effective and sustainable agricultural policies, programmes and projects. It does this with funding from multilateral institutions such as the World Bank, regional development banks and international funds as well as FAO resources.

The Investment Centre is committed to the United Nation's Millennium Development Goals specifically the goal of eradicating extreme poverty and hunger.
