SPARK is an independent non-profit foundation and was founded in 1994. It has field offices in Belgrade, Mitrovica, Pristina and Skopje and Tuzla and SPARK-supported Business Start-up Centres in Bar, Bitola, Kragujevac, Pristina and Zenica.
SPARK has developed projects in various parts of South East Europe, including Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Albania and Serbia. Since 2004, SPARK has also been working in Afghanistan. Columbia, Sudan, Iraq, Liberia and the Palestinian Territories are the focus of new project ideas.
SPARK cooperates with academic and economic institutions, as well as Ministries of Education, Ministries of Economic Affairs, and a large number of NGOs and student organisations across Europe.
2006 has been a dynamic and successful year for our partners and SPARK. We have maintained a good balance between programme implementation, new initiative development and strengthening the internal organisation. As in 2005, all our programmes gravitated around developing education and entrepreneurship so that young and ambitious people are empowered to lead their post-conflict society into prosperity.
In 2006 three new projects started: a Business Start-Up Centre in Pristina (Kosovo), a Youth Programme in Mitrovica (Kosovo) and a programme assisting the transfer of Medical Students from Tetovo (Macedonia). We also developed four new initiatives with our local economic and educational partners that can hopefully be started in 2007. One of the most challenging was a private international vocational college in Mitrovica (Kosovo). Two new projects were written for Georgia. The most successful initiative was a proposal to establish four business start-up centres in South East Europe.
